The Big Changes 2020 Brought

Updated: Apr 29, 2021

I meant to post this blog months ago. Somehow it got overlooked in the midst of everything going on around me. If there seems to be interest, I am going to post periodic blogs like this as well as the occasional newsletters with important news and updates.

Over a year ago, I was selecting choir music and preparing a rehearsal schedule for Easter Choir at Mt. Scott Church; the same church we held our semi-annual recitals at. Turns out the choir would never have its first rehearsal. I had been a volunteer director there for two years for Christmas and Easter during a time of transition. It was wonderful having another outlet to express my love for conducting. A lot of changes are happening now that Mt. Scott Church has merged with New Hope Church, and I am still unsure of what my role will be, if any.

In addition to the Mt. Scott choir, my Reedwood Children’s Choir, 2nd grade choir at Lewis Elementary, and 5th grade choir at Grout, all came to an abrupt end, all without goodbyes. It has been hard not being in front of a group of musicians; it feels like something is missing in my life. There is something absolutely life given in being in front of a group of musicians.

The shutdown lead to big and unexpected changes for most of us. For me, moving lessons to online was a daunting task. Understandably, some students weren't interested in online lessons. Since the initial change, I have been working on ways to make online learning as efficient as in-person. Recently, I have been adding supplemental resources and downloadable content. More is on its way in the coming months.

There are children's choir resources available at www.maestroryan.org/reedwood for kids that would like some fun spiritual songs to sing along with. In an effort to make maestroryan.org more interactive, there is now a forum where members of our community can communicate. Go to www.maestroryan.org/forum and join a conversation. If you took the time to read this blog, thank you! Leave a comment saying hi.
